Dr. Charles A. Pinderhughes, chief of psychiatry at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury for many years, died Monday in his home in Boston. He was 79. Dr. Pinderhughes taught at Boston, Harvard, and Tufts universities and was a member of the boards of directors of the Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center, Freedom House, and Metco. He also was active in the NAACP. In the 1970s, he developed a training program for mental health workers and aides at Boston State Hospital.

He was born in Baltimore, and graduated from Dartmouth College and the Howard University School of Medicine. After serving in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, he trained at the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute.

He leaves his wife, Elaine (Brazier); four sons, Charles Jr. and Richard, both of Boston, Robert of Minneapolis, and Howard of Berkeley, Calif; a daughter, Ellen of Nashville; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at noon Monday in Marsh Chapel at Boston University.
