Vertie Ferina 'Felix' Ives Jr., 55, a retired civil engineer who worked in Washington from 1962 to the 1980s, died of a heart attack Jan. 31 at his home in Richmond.

Early in his career, Mr. Ives was a senior civil engineer-technician with the D.C. Department of Highways and Traffic. He later worked for Bechtel Corp. on the Metro system, the North Carolina Energy Corp., Construction Environment Inc., and the Jackson and Tull and Turner Associates firms in Washington. A Richmond native, Mr. Ives attended Dartmouth College, New York University, Virginia Union University, the University of New Hampshire, Howard University and the University of Northern Colorado, where he received a bachelor's degree in public administration and urban affairs.

He served in the Army. Mr. Ives was a member of the National Technical Association and the Hillcrest-Marlow Heights and Temple Hills civic associations. He served on the board of the D.C. chapter of the NAACP and on the Henson Creek-South Potomac Citizens Advisory Committee of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

His marriage to Patricia A. Carter ended in divorce. Survivors include two daughters, Felicia Armenta Ives of McLean and Julia Alana Ives of Temple Hills, and his mother, Mazie Julia Ives of Richmond.
