Quotes from Biographical Sources
George F. Smith, professor of mathematics in Lincoln Institute, Jefferson City, Mo., died there March 23, 1900, of consumption. He was born at Raleigh, N.C., in 1877, both his father, Rev. George S. Smith ('76), and his mother before her marriage Elizabeth Outlaw ('73), being graduates of Atlanta University. He entered this institution in the Middle Preparatory year, and graduated at the head of his class in 1897. For three successive years he won the first prize in the Quiz Club oratorical and literary contest. He was the first editor-in-chief of the Scroll, and manager of the victorious baseball and football teams of 1896-97.
He then entered the senior class at Dartmouth College, from which institution he graduated with high rank in 1898, being one of the six Commencement speakers out of a class of 72. He also won the second of the Smith prizes for extemporaneous debate. Since then he has filled with marked ability the chair of mathematics at Lincoln Institute.
As this brief record shows, he was an unusually promising young man, combining the elements of excellence and strength in a remarkable degree. We unite with his bereaved relatives, and his many friends elsewhere, in mourning his loss.
