Charles Edward Lane, Jr., 50 years old, of near Georgetown, [Delaware] real estate broker, and leader in civic affairs, died early yesterday morning, in Mt. Sinai Hospital, Philadelphia, where he had undergone an operation the latter part of last week.

Mr. Lane was born in Alexandria, Va., the son of the late Charles Edward and Virginia Ashley Lane. Educated in the schools of Washington, D. C., he obtained his law degree at Dartmouth College. During World War I, he served as a captain in the Infantry of the U. S. Army. After the armistice was signed he served several months in France in the claims section of the judge advocate general’s office. Following his return he entered the realty business. For several years prior to coming to Georgetown, seven and one-half years ago, he operated his own realty business in New York. He operated a large chicken farm east of Georgetown and last July was appointed the E. A. Strout Real Estate, Inc., representative for Eastern Sussex County.

Active in civic affairs, Mr. Lane was a member of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club, Midland Grange, the Sussex County Farm Bureau and was chairman of the New Ditch Company of Georgetown, Nanticoke and Dagsboro, interested in drainage and soil conservation. He was active in the planning and promotion of the first horse show staged here and has been intensely interested in the proposed establishment of a hospital in Georgetown. At the time of his death, Mr. Lane was a member of the Twenty-third Street Real Estate Association of New York City and of the Chelsea Planning Commission which carried out the slum clearance program of that city. He was active in the affairs of St. Paul’s P. E. Church, Georgetown.

Mr. Lane is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Smith Lane. Funeral services will be conducted in St. Paul’s P. E. Church, Wednesday at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Joseph C. Settle, rector of the church, officiating. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
