Williford Napoleon Thompson was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and raised in the small African American community of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He entered Dartmouth in 1917 and left after one year without graduating. He worked in the shipyards of Portsmouth before eventually settling in Flushing, Queens, where he died at age 85.
