Born in Albany, Georgia and encouraged by his mother, a high school principal, Jim Griffin trained at Williston Seminary (Williston Northampton School today) before entering Dartmouth College, graduating in 1923 and then studying law at Harvard. He died unexpectedly at the age of 32 in Philadelphia at the home of his sister, Dr. Leah E. Matthews (Griffin), a well-remembered early graduate the Women's Medical College of Philadelphia.
